Amazon Web Services CEO says half of white-collar jobs may 'change' due to AI — but it won't be a 'wipe-out'

In a recent episode of the Platformer podcast, Matt Garman, the CEO of Amazon Web Services, addressed the common fears surrounding artificial intelligence and its potential impact on white-collar jobs. Garman emphasized that while many positions may undergo significant changes due to AI, a complete workforce elimination is unlikely. He stated, "Wipe out and change are different," citing the introduction of Microsoft Excel as an example of technology that transformed job roles without eradicating them. Garman urged listeners to consider that the landscape of work is dynamic; he believes new job opportunities will emerge as existing roles evolve. Highlighting the value of entry-level workers, Garman reassured that these positions will remain essential, despite concerns about AI replacing junior staff. "Entry-level employees are often the most cost-effective to hire, can assimilate a company's culture, and are driven to learn new tools," he remarked. This year, Amazon plans to recruit over 11,000 software development interns and early-career engineers globally, reflecting a commitment to nurturing fresh talent. Garman noted the energy and innovative perspectives that new recruits bring, contrasting them with long-term employees who may lack fresh ideas. He believes that adaptability and a willingness to learn will be crucial for workers in the AI-driven future. "If you look at what your job was two years ago versus what it will be in two years, it’s going to be vastly different," he asserted, encouraging employees to embrace this change. Ultimately, Garman suggested that the ability to adapt might soon eclipse specific skills as a primary attribute sought by employers. "We need to consider not just what skill set you have, but your capacity to learn and grow," he concluded.
