Peak XV-backed Avataar launches indigenous video model Varya, bets on low-cost AI video generation

In a significant leap for India's artificial intelligence landscape, startup Avataar.ai introduced Varya on June 12, a cutting-edge video generation model developed with the backing of the IndiaAI Mission. This innovative platform aims to provide a cost-effective alternative to existing global AI video systems, aligning with India's vision to cultivate its own AI technologies tailored for local languages, cultures, and applications. The launch event featured S. Krishnan, Secretary of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), who hailed Varya as a landmark achievement in India's quest for AI excellence. "The introduction of this foundational model under the IndiaAI Mission is a pivotal moment in our AI journey," Krishnan stated. He emphasized that Varya epitomizes the research-driven capability building that the country aspires to achieve. Varya employs a distillation-based architecture, streamlining video generation from 50 steps down to just four, without compromising on output quality. Avataar claims that this efficiency allows Varya to produce videos at a mere cost of approximately Rs 0.48 per second, making it up to 10 times more effective than many established global models, according to internal assessments. Sravanth Aluru, CEO and co-founder of Avataar, highlighted the importance of efficiency in defining India's AI success. "For a nation with 1.4 billion people, affordability is essential, not just an added feature," Aluru remarked. He stressed that such lower inference costs are vital for deploying AI solutions across various sectors, from education to small businesses. What sets Varya apart is its design tailored specifically for the Indian context. Unlike traditional video models that primarily draw from global internet data, Varya is fine-tuned to capture the essence of Indian culture, incorporating regional nuances, festivals, cuisine, and daily life. The potential applications of this model are vast, ranging from educational content to government communications and advertising for local enterprises. With Varya, Avataar aims to empower a new wave of AI applications, making frontier-quality video generation accessible and efficient for a diverse population.
