Avalanche’s desktop fusion reactor delivers blistering-hot plasma

In a remarkable advancement for fusion energy, Avalanche has announced that its compact fusion reactor has achieved a significant milestone by heating plasma to approximately 11 million degrees Celsius—almost the same temperature found at the core of the Sun. This accomplishment positions Avalanche among a select group of companies that have reached such high temperatures, a critical step toward harnessing the power of fusion. Unlike traditional methods of measuring temperature, plasma physicists utilize a measurement called kiloelectron volts (kEV) to evaluate the energy of particles within the plasma. The fusion community typically keeps a close eye on experiments that surpass the 1 keV threshold, as Bob Mumgaard, CEO of Commonwealth Fusion Systems, noted, stating, "That’s hot enough that the world will take notice." Temperature is a vital factor in fusion experiments; without sufficient heat, the particles within the plasma are less likely to collide and fuse into new atoms, thereby limiting energy production. However, if the plasma can maintain a high temperature and density, it opens the door to fusion reactions that release substantial energy. While reaching this milestone does not guarantee immediate success, it indicates that Avalanche is making strides toward creating optimal conditions within its reactor for successful fusion reactions. Notably, the startup's small-scale prototypes suggest that fusion power may be viable at a smaller scale compared to the larger reactors typically pursued by other companies, which often aim for outputs in the range of dozens or hundreds of megawatts. If Avalanche can refine its approach to develop a more compact and cost-effective fusion power plant, it could pose a serious challenge to existing energy technologies, including diesel generators and natural gas turbines. The startup's latest fusion core, named Jyn, has a diameter of just five inches and has undergone 25 updates since last fall, showcasing Avalanche's commitment to rapid innovation in the fusion sector. Although the results have yet to be published in a peer-reviewed journal, Avalanche has indicated that a plasma physicist from MIT has validated their findings.
