A tragic incident involving a duck in Austin, Texas, has ignited significant concern among residents regarding the presence of autonomous vehicles in their community. The situation unfolded in the Mueller Lake area when a self-driving car, operated by Avride with a human safety driver present, struck and killed a duck without stopping, leading to an outcry among local residents. The incident was first highlighted in a Facebook group dedicated to the Mueller neighborhood, where a concerned resident shared their shock at how the vehicle ‘steamrolled through’ without any hesitation. The duck, which was nesting near a popular Italian restaurant, was familiar to many in the area, heightening feelings of anger and distrust towards the technology. In response to concerns over the duck's eggs, local residents have taken action by placing them in an incubator to ensure their safety, as reported by Axios Austin. Avride confirmed to TechCrunch that the vehicle was indeed operating in autonomous mode during the incident. Although they have not halted all testing on public roads, the company has modified its operational routes to avoid specific streets around Mueller Lake where the incident occurred, according to spokesperson Yulia Shveyko. The post that sparked the controversy also alleged that the vehicle ignored a stop sign. However, Avride disputed this claim, stating that their internal review found no evidence of such an infraction. They reported that the vehicle made proper stops at all relevant intersections and have analyzed the incident through simulations to enhance their technology and prevent future occurrences. Avride is not alone in the autonomous vehicle landscape in Austin, as other companies like Zoox, Tesla, and Waymo are also testing or operating robotaxi services in the area. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges and public scrutiny facing self-driving technology as it becomes more integrated into everyday life.
