A collective of prominent authors, including Lauren Groff, Lev Grossman, R.F. Kuang, Dennis Lehane, and Geoffrey Maguire, has issued an urgent open letter urging book publishers to restrict their reliance on artificial intelligence technologies. The letter emphasizes the importance of human creativity in the publishing process, advocating for policies such as exclusively hiring human narrators for audiobooks. The authors contend that the work of writers is being appropriated by AI companies without fair compensation. They state, "Instead of rewarding writers with a share of the profits generated from our labor, profits are funneled to those who create technologies built on our unacknowledged contributions." Among their demands, the authors are calling for a commitment from publishers to refrain from releasing any books produced by machines. They also insist that publishers should not replace their human employees with AI systems or diminish their roles to mere oversight positions for AI tools. The initial open letter has garnered significant attention, attracting an additional 1,100 signatures within just a day of its release, as reported by NPR. In parallel, authors have initiated legal action against tech companies for using their works to train AI models, though recent rulings from federal judges have posed challenges to these lawsuits.
