Aurora Innovation has officially entered into a partnership with distribution powerhouse McLane, marking a significant advancement in the deployment of driverless trucking technology. This collaboration comes after a successful multi-year pilot program that demonstrated the capabilities of Aurora's autonomous vehicle systems. Under the newly announced commercial agreement, specially equipped trucks featuring Aurora's self-driving technology will be tasked with transporting goods along the busy corridor between Dallas and Houston. Notably, these vehicles will operate without a human safety driver, though a designated "human observer" will be present in the cab, adhering to stipulations set forth in an agreement with truck manufacturer Paccar. Aurora's plans extend beyond this initial route, with ambitions to expand to additional paths connecting McLane distribution centers throughout the U.S. Sun Belt by the end of the year. The partnership began to take shape in 2023, when the companies initiated a pilot using autonomous trucks that included a human safety operator. This pilot evolved to include two daily round trips between the two major Texas cities. With McLane's recent decision to transition to fully driverless operations, the trucks will now operate seven days a week along this route. The innovative logistics model utilizes Aurora's technology for long-haul segments, seamlessly handing over control to a McLane truck driver for local deliveries to clients, including popular fast food chains. This handoff occurs at the terminals situated conveniently off the freeway in both Dallas and Houston. This commercial contract represents a significant milestone for Aurora, as it seeks to shift from merely being a developer of autonomous trucks to a viable commercial operator generating revenue from its driverless routes. This development follows the launch of Aurora's commercial self-driving truck service in Texas last year. Since then, the company has also secured additional agreements, including one with Detmar Logistics to transport frac sand, and another with Hirschbach Motor Lines for the purchase of 500 Aurora-powered trucks, expected to finalize later this year. Currently, Aurora operates driverless trucks on several routes, including Dallas to Houston and beyond, with the first-quarter earnings report set to be released soon.
