Take a look inside Audi’s new big three-row Q9 SUV

MUNICH—This summer, Audi is preparing to reveal its latest flagship vehicle, shifting focus from the traditional A8 sedan to a more SUV-centric approach. With SUVs gaining immense popularity, particularly in North America, the brand is excited to introduce the Q9, its inaugural full-size SUV. In a nod to modern consumer needs, Audi has even made last-minute adjustments to accommodate larger insulated mugs in the redesigned cupholders. While the Q9 is currently cloaked in exterior camouflage, glimpses of its production-ready interior have been unveiled, showcasing one of the several possible trim options. For those looking for a more serene aesthetic, Audi offers a palette of beiges and browns paired with an intriguing open-grain olive wood that stands in contrast to the more conventional coarse carbon fiber. This thoughtful blend of textures enhances the Q9’s interior, moving away from shiny surfaces in favor of a sophisticated matte finish. The dashboard design draws inspiration from Audi's 2021 Grandsphere concept, aiming to wrap elegantly around the front passengers. Unlike the Grandsphere's futuristic vision that didn’t need to conform to current technology, the Q9 is packed with extensive digital features. Its main instrument display and infotainment screens curve towards the driver, providing a clear line of sight over the hood while incorporating an interactive light along the base of the windshield for turn signals and hazard alerts. Audi designer Chris Koelle emphasized the intention behind the Q9's design, stating, “When you close the car… what we wanted to create is a calming atmosphere, giving a luxury experience where everything is controlled, quiet, and in its place.” Good news for fans of Audi's innovative features: the moving map view is making a comeback on the main instrument display, a feature the brand initially introduced with its Virtual Cockpit. Although it had been absent from several recent models, it is also present in the compact Q3, showcasing the brand's commitment to integrating advanced technology across its lineup. Both the Q3 and Q9 share a similar control mechanism for wipers and lights, providing a familiar feel in their operation, reminiscent of traditional stalks.
