A man has been charged with attempted murder following an attack on the residence of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, which prosecutors say was driven by an intense aversion to artificial intelligence. The accused, Daniel Moreno-Gama, allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at Altman’s home, and is now facing serious charges, including those at the federal level for attempted destruction using explosives and unlawful possession of a firearm. The FBI's Acting Special Agent in Charge, Matt Cobo, expressed grave concern over the premeditated nature of the assault, emphasizing that it represented a significant escalation in violence targeting technology leaders. Following his arrest, investigators found a document in Moreno-Gama's possession that outlined his intentions, including a declaration to kill Altman and a warning of what he termed humanity's approaching doom due to AI advancements. In court documents, Altman is referred to as “Victim-1,” described as the chief executive of a prominent AI research firm. The document Moreno-Gama carried included a section ominously titled “Your Last Warning,” where he stated he had either killed or attempted to kill his target. It also contained the names and addresses of several other AI industry figures. Furthermore, the document featured a section discussing the supposed existential threats posed by artificial intelligence, labeled “some more words on the matter of our impending extinction.” In a chilling message to Altman, he suggested that survival would be a divine sign for the CEO to seek redemption. The attack occurred early Friday morning when Moreno-Gama threw an incendiary device at Altman’s property, igniting a fire that fortunately resulted in no injuries. Shortly thereafter, he attempted to break into OpenAI’s headquarters, where he threatened to harm anyone inside. Responding officers quickly apprehended him at the scene. An OpenAI spokesperson confirmed the incident, expressing gratitude for the rapid response of law enforcement and reaffirming their commitment to employee safety. In a public statement, Altman reflected on the incident and the turbulent atmosphere surrounding AI discourse, urging for a reduction in aggressive rhetoric within the industry. In a troubling follow-up, Altman’s residence experienced another attack involving gunfire just two days later, leading to the arrest of two additional suspects. These events underscore the rising tensions and threats faced by leaders in the AI sector.
