In a significant move to enhance its network capabilities, AT&T announced on Tuesday its intention to acquire critical wireless spectrum licenses from EchoStar for approximately $23 billion. This strategic investment comes as the telecom giant aims to strengthen its position in an increasingly competitive market. The announcement follows discussions initiated by former President Donald Trump in June, urging EchoStar, the parent company of Dish TV, and Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Chair Brendan Carr to come to a resolution regarding the future of EchoStar's wireless spectrum licenses. This deal is seen as AT&T's latest effort to accelerate its fiber and 5G network expansion amidst rising internet usage and a saturated wireless landscape. Following the news, EchoStar's stock surged over 40% in premarket trading, while AT&T's shares experienced a modest increase of 1.5%. In May, the FCC had launched an investigation into EchoStar's compliance with obligations to provide 5G services, raising questions about the company's buildout extensions and mobile-satellite operations. EchoStar had been proactive in seeking to protect its valuable wireless spectrum licenses from potential revocation by the FCC. CEO Hamid Akhavan described the AT&T agreement as a pivotal step in securing a solid financial future for EchoStar, stating, "This transaction puts our business on a solid financial path, further facilitating EchoStar’s long-term success and enhancing our ability to innovate and compete as a hybrid network operator." Last year, DirecTV, a subsidiary of AT&T, abandoned plans to acquire EchoStar's satellite television business, which includes Dish TV, due to a failed debt-exchange proposal. In a separate deal earlier this year, AT&T secured Lumen Technologies’ consumer fiber operations for $5.75 billion, further solidifying its strategy to combine high-speed fiber with mobile services. The spectrum licenses in question will bolster AT&T’s low-band and mid-band spectrum holdings across more than 400 markets nationwide. Additionally, the companies have expanded their network services agreement, allowing EchoStar to function as a hybrid mobile network operator under the Boost Mobile brand, with AT&T serving as the primary network partner. AT&T has also reiterated its financial forecasts for 2025, indicating plans to finance the spectrum acquisition through existing cash reserves and additional borrowings.
