Atlassian to buy Arc developer The Browser Company for $610M

Atlassian, known for its productivity software, has made headlines with its decision to acquire The Browser Company, the creator of the Arc and Dia browsers, for a substantial $610 million in cash. Mike Cannon-Brookes, the CEO and co-founder of Atlassian, emphasized the transformative potential of this deal, stating, "Today’s browsers weren’t built for work; they were built for browsing. This deal is a bold step forward in reimagining the browser for knowledge work in the AI era." Cannon-Brookes envisions a future where an AI-enhanced browser is tailored specifically for knowledge workers, seamlessly integrating with various SaaS applications. He expressed optimism about the collaboration, highlighting that it will cater to the needs of professionals who rely on multiple tabs for their daily tasks. Josh Miller, CEO of The Browser Company, announced via a post on X that the company will maintain its independence after the acquisition while continuing to develop its latest browser, Dia. This move comes after the company shifted focus from its earlier browser, Arc. Miller pointed out that the acquisition will accelerate feature development and hiring, ultimately enhancing support across different platforms. The acquisition is projected to finalize in the second quarter of Atlassian’s fiscal year 2026. Notably, The Browser Company recently secured $50 million in funding, bringing its total investment to $128 million, with notable backers including LinkedIn’s Jeff Weiner and Notion’s Akshay Kothari. This announcement follows closely on the heels of a U.S. District Court's decision not to compel Google to divest its Chrome browser, adding another layer of significance to the ongoing evolution in the browser landscape.
