Uber and Waymo’s commercial robotaxi service is open for business in Atlanta

Residents of Atlanta can now summon Waymo's robotaxis through the Uber app, marking an exciting expansion of the 'Waymo on Uber' service, which previously launched in Austin. On Tuesday, the two tech giants announced that this commercial venture will initially span approximately 65 square miles within the city. If successful, this initiative could significantly boost the operational landscapes for both companies. Uber, already collaborating with 18 autonomous vehicle firms, reports a staggering annual rate of 1.5 million mobility and delivery trips conducted by autonomous vehicles on its platform. Meanwhile, Waymo boasts an impressive record of delivering 250,000 paid robotaxi rides weekly across major cities, including Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco. The inclusion of Atlanta is expected to further elevate these figures. Currently, Waymo's fleet in Atlanta consists of a few dozen vehicles, with plans for gradual expansion in the future. According to a company representative, both Atlanta and Austin’s fleets are anticipated to grow to the hundreds over time. The 'Waymo on Uber' service is designed as a hybrid model, allowing both robotaxi and human-driven cars to operate concurrently. Users of the Uber app can customize their preferences to increase the likelihood of being paired with a Waymo robotaxi. Once matched with a Waymo vehicle, users have the option to accept the ride or switch to a human-operated vehicle. When the robotaxi arrives, riders will utilize the Uber app to unlock the car, access the trunk, and commence their journey. Pricing for robotaxi rides will align with UberX, Uber Comfort, or Uber Comfort Electric rides driven by a human, as confirmed by both companies. The partnership delineates the responsibilities between Uber and Waymo effectively. Uber oversees the charging, maintenance, and cleaning of the autonomous vehicles, as well as managing user access through its app. In contrast, Waymo is tasked with monitoring the technology and operations of the driverless vehicles, including roadside assistance and specific rider support functions. Last September, the two companies announced their intention to roll out a robotaxi service in Austin and Atlanta by early 2025 as part of a broader partnership. Following this, they launched the 'Waymo on Uber' service in Austin in March, with Waymo's fleet in that city exceeding 100 robotaxis.
