Asus gives the ROX Xbox Ally the OLED screen it deserves

Asus has officially announced the ROG Xbox Ally X20, a new handheld gaming device set to hit the market this holiday season. This model features a vibrant OLED screen, a notable upgrade from its predecessor, the original Xbox Ally. The X20 boasts a 7.4-inch display, slightly larger than the previous 7-inch version, allowing it to compete directly with other gaming handhelds like the Steam Deck OLED and the anticipated Switch 2. The new 1080p HDR panel significantly enhances brightness, increasing from 500 nits to an impressive 1400 nits. Additionally, the inclusion of an anti-glare coating ensures that gamers can enjoy their adventures even under direct sunlight. Equipped with a 120 Hz display, the X20 also supports Dolby Vision HDR, delivering rich colors and improved visuals. The device is designed for smooth performance, featuring FreeSync Premium Pro technology to maintain stable frame rates while expanding the color range. In terms of controls, Asus has revamped the thumbstick mechanics by introducing magnetic TMR thumbsticks, which replace the older carbon-film potentiometers. This change is aimed at reducing the risk of stick drift and enhancing durability. Furthermore, the new d-pad includes a versatile lift-and-twist mechanism that allows it to switch between a traditional four-direction layout and an eight-direction pad, reminiscent of the beloved Xbox 360 controllers. Early reviews from press outlets that tested the X20 highlight additional enhancements, such as quieter face buttons and an upgraded grip feel on the sleek black-and-gold chassis. While Asus markets this device as a collector’s item, its impressive specifications suggest it could become a significant contender in the handheld gaming market.
