Astropad’s Workbench reimagines remote desktop for AI agents, not IT support

The demand for Apple's Mac Mini has surged, particularly in China, as it has emerged as a prime platform for experimenting with autonomous AI agents like OpenClaw. Addressing this growing need, Astropad has launched a specialized remote desktop solution called Astropad Workbench, aimed at enhancing interactions with AI technologies. On Tuesday, Astropad's CEO, Matt Ronge, introduced Workbench, which he describes as a remote desktop tool designed specifically for the AI era. While AI agents operating on a Mac Mini might not require a display, human operators often need to log in to monitor operations, check logs, or restart processes. Workbench provides an array of features, including high-fidelity streaming, voice command capabilities, and support for various input methods such as keyboard, Apple Pencil, and touch. Additionally, it offers clients for both iPad and iPhone, allowing users to access their remote desktop from anywhere. The inspiration behind Workbench came from the team's own needs, as they sought a solution to monitor their AI agents effectively. Ronge noted, "We have heavily adopted AI at Astropad, and we’ve been using agents. Sometimes, you have an agent running a long task, and you want to check on it." Existing remote desktop tools fell short of their requirements, prompting the development of Workbench. Astropad Workbench employs the company's proprietary LIQUID protocol, designed to ensure low latency and high visual fidelity, even at Retina resolutions. This technology successfully maintains clarity and detail, avoiding common issues like blurring or pixelation. It also powers Astropad's other applications, such as Luna Display and Astropad Studio, which enhance the iPad's functionality as a secondary display and professional drawing tablet. While high-fidelity monitoring of AI agents may not always be essential, Ronge emphasizes that it is beneficial, especially for approving designs or mock-ups generated by the AI. Astropad faces competition from well-established remote desktop software providers, such as Jump Desktop and AnyDesk. However, Ronge believes that existing solutions were not tailored for the specific needs of AI monitoring. With Workbench, users can easily track their AI agents' progress, address issues, and restart tasks—all from their iPhone or iPad. Ronge highlighted Astropad's extensive experience in developing high-quality iPad applications, which informed the creation of Workbench. The software leverages Apple’s voice model, allowing users to issue commands to their AI agents simply by speaking into their devices. As a new product, Workbench is still undergoing refinement, with plans to introduce support for Windows and Linux in the near future. Currently, the software is compatible with macOS 15 and up and iOS 26, available for free with a 20-minute daily access limit, or through a subscription of $10 per month or $50 annually. Astropad, a self-funded and profitable tech company, boasts over 100,000 customers who have purchased its iPad accessories and software. With the launch of Workbench, Ronge sees a strong potential market among both AI enthusiasts and businesses, as the need for effective remote support for AI agents continues to grow. "I totally think businesses are gonna buy it," he remarked, citing significant productivity gains from using the new tool.
