This black hole “burps” with Death Star energy

In a captivating turn of events, astronomers have observed a black hole, affectionately nicknamed "Jetty McJetface," exhibiting extraordinary behavior following a tidal disruption event (TDE) identified as AT2018hyz. Initially recorded in 2018 and thought to have faded, this celestial phenomenon has remarkably reactivated, unleashing an intense burst of radio waves that has left scientists intrigued. Yvette Cendes, an astrophysicist from the University of Oregon and a co-author of recent research on this phenomenon, shared insights into the black hole's vibrant resurgence. Since its reawakening, Jetty McJetface has become 50 times brighter, with predictions suggesting that its luminosity may not peak until 2027, according to findings published in the Astrophysical Journal. It’s a common misapprehension that black holes behave like cosmic vacuums, voraciously consuming everything in their vicinity. In truth, only those objects that cross the event horizon are swallowed, while others may be ejected in powerful jets. During a TDE, a star encounters the black hole's formidable gravitational forces, resulting in a process where it is torn apart—often referred to as "spaghettification." This violent encounter can eject a portion of the star's mass outward, forming a rotating accretion disk that emits significant amounts of X-rays and visible light. These jets provide astronomers with critical evidence of a black hole's existence, as they typically manifest shortly after a TDE occurs. The ongoing monitoring of Jetty McJetface not only enhances our understanding of black hole dynamics but also sheds light on the complex interactions between stars and these enigmatic cosmic giants.
