Asian technology shares faced a significant downturn on Monday, following a negative trend in the global market linked to artificial intelligence. This decline comes after the U.S. Nasdaq, heavily weighted with tech stocks, dropped over 4.5% last week. In South Korea, major players like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix saw their stock prices tumble by 5% and 2%, respectively. This contributed to a steep drop in the Kospi Index, which fell as much as 8%, given that these two corporations account for more than 40% of the index's total value. Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) experienced a 2.1% decline, while Hon Hai Precision, also known as Foxconn, dropped by 5.1%. SoftBank Group, a significant tech investor in Japan, suffered a notable 7.5% decrease in its stock price. Other Japanese firms, including Tokyo Electron and Advantest, also reported losses of 6.7% and 5%, respectively. This recent sell-off marks a stark contrast to the previous surge in Asia's tech stocks, which had been buoyed by optimistic investor sentiment surrounding AI technologies. Last month, both Samsung and SK Hynix achieved remarkable milestones, each surpassing a market valuation of $1 trillion, while SoftBank recently earned the title of Japan's most valuable company. However, the tide shifted dramatically after Broadcom reported a revenue shortfall for its fiscal second quarter, leading to a sharp decline in its shares and triggering a ripple effect throughout the tech industry. The VanEck Semiconductor ETF (SMH) plummeted by over 9% last Friday, while SoftBank's British subsidiary, Arm Holdings, saw its shares drop nearly 13%. Micron Technology also experienced a decline exceeding 13%. According to a recent analysis by UOB, this tech sector downturn has erased approximately $1.8 trillion in market capitalization within the S&P 500. Despite the current negative trends, UOB remains optimistic about the future of tech and software companies, particularly with the anticipated debut of a new space exploration and AI firm on the Nasdaq, potentially marking one of the largest IPOs to date. Broader markets in Asia also reflected this downward trend on Monday, amid escalating tensions related to the ongoing conflict in Iran, indicating that geopolitical issues may further impact market stability.
