Asana acquires no-code agent-builder Stack AI

Asana has made a significant move in the tech landscape by acquiring workflow automation firm Stack AI for $75 million. This strategic acquisition aims to reinforce Asana's position as a leading AI-native workplace platform. The founders of Stack AI, Tony Rosinol and Bernard Aceituno, will be joining the Asana team following the deal. The acquisition was announced during Asana's earnings call, highlighting the company's commitment to integrating advanced AI solutions into its offerings. Asana envisions evolving its platform into a comprehensive 'operating system for human-agent teams.' Stack AI specializes in creating agents designed to seamlessly interact with existing business systems, utilizing data from platforms like Salesforce, Slack, and Gsuite. Emerging from Y Combinator's Winter '23 cohort, Stack AI has faced tough competition from established automation services such as Zapier and cutting-edge AI research labs like OpenAI and Anthropic. Before the acquisition, Stack AI had successfully raised nearly $20 million, including a substantial $16 million in a recent Series A funding round backed by prominent investors like Gradient, Epaklon Capital, Lobby VC, LifeX Ventures, and Vercel's CEO Guillermo Rauch. While Asana is best known for its work management tools, it has been actively expanding its AI-driven products, including the recent launch of AI Studio and the AI Teammates series. Asana believes that its ability to integrate deeply with corporate workflows gives it a competitive edge, allowing it to provide context and training data that other tools might lack. Despite facing challenges in the public markets, particularly following the rise of AI technologies like ChatGPT and the departure of founder Dustin Moskovitz as CEO last March, Asana has seen steady revenue growth. The new leadership is optimistic that the latest acquisition will bolster their human-agent product line, helping to revitalize the company's market performance. "This acquisition accelerates our roadmap and enters us into the next phase of human-agent work," stated CEO Dan Rogers. "We’re already experiencing significant momentum with AI Teammates and AI Studio… Stack AI enables us to further agentify the most complex business processes from beginning to end."
