Artemis II broke Fred Haise’s distance record, but he is happy to pass it on

The Artemis II mission has achieved a remarkable feat by surpassing the distance record previously held by the Apollo 13 mission, marking a significant milestone in space exploration. With plans to send astronauts to the Moon's surface in the forthcoming years, this mission is paving the way for a new chapter in humanity's journey to the Moon, ensuring that the memories of lunar visits remain alive. Currently, only five astronauts from the historic Apollo missions remain, all of whom are now in their 90s. Between 1968 and 1972, a total of 24 astronauts traveled to the Moon, with 12 of them having the extraordinary experience of walking on its surface. While we eagerly await the next Moonwalkers, Artemis II introduces four new astronauts to the ranks of lunar explorers. The Artemis II crew, all aged between their 40s and 50s, traveled over 4,000 miles from the Moon, achieving a height beyond that of any Apollo mission. This four-member team set a new benchmark for human distance traveled from Earth, reaching an impressive 252,756 miles (406,771 kilometers). This distance eclipsed the previous record of 248,655 miles (400,171 kilometers) set by Apollo 13 astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise in April 1970. Fred Haise, one of the Apollo 13 astronauts, shared his thoughts on this new record during a recent interview, expressing his support for the advancements of Artemis II. The Apollo 13 record stood for nearly 56 years, and both NASA officials and space enthusiasts are optimistic that the Artemis II achievement will inspire future missions to break new ground sooner rather than later. As Artemis II followed a free-return trajectory, it utilized the Moon's gravitational pull to safely guide the Orion capsule back to Earth. This strategic approach means that future lunar missions may not need to travel as far past the Moon's far side, opening up exciting possibilities for exploration.
