NASA’s Artemis II rocket rolls to launch pad, but key test looms ahead

This weekend marked a significant milestone in space exploration as NASA's Artemis II rocket was successfully transported to its launch pad at Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The rocket made a slow but steady journey, traveling just 1 mph over a four-mile route from the Vehicle Assembly Building to Launch Complex 39B, a process that took approximately 12 hours. The upcoming Artemis II mission is poised to be a groundbreaking human spaceflight, set to take astronauts further from Earth than anyone has ventured before. The Orion capsule, perched atop the rocket, will eventually reach speeds exceeding 25,000 mph as it makes its fiery return to Earth after exploring cislunar space. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman highlighted the significance of this mission, stating, "This is the start of a very long journey. We ended our last human exploration of the moon on Apollo 17." While the Artemis II crew won't land on the lunar surface, they will travel over 4,000 miles beyond the Moon's far side, setting the stage for a historic reentry into the Earth's atmosphere. The mission will also see several noteworthy firsts: Astronaut Christina Koch will be the first woman to fly near the Moon, and Jeremy Hansen will become the first non-American astronaut to achieve this feat.
