Suspect in attack at Sam Altman’s home held without bail

A 20-year-old man, identified as Daniel Moreno-Gama, has been remanded without bail following a violent incident at the home of Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI. According to reports from California Superior Court, his arraignment on serious charges, including attempted murder and attempted arson, has been postponed until May 5. Authorities claim that Moreno-Gama traveled from Texas to San Francisco, where he allegedly launched an incendiary device at Altman’s residence early Friday morning. Subsequently, he reportedly attempted to force his way into OpenAI's headquarters, threatening to kill anyone present with a chair as a makeshift weapon. The San Francisco Police Department apprehended Moreno-Gama outside the OpenAI offices, where he was found in possession of additional incendiary materials and a manifesto denouncing artificial intelligence. This document reportedly called for violence against AI executives and their investors, intensifying concerns regarding his motivations. No injuries were reported during the incident, but the charges he faces are severe. In addition to state-level accusations of attempted murder and arson, federal charges related to possession of an unregistered firearm and the use of explosives have also been filed. U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of California, Craig Missakian, has indicated that Moreno-Gama may face further allegations related to domestic terrorism. In response to the events, an OpenAI spokesperson emphasized the importance of respectful dialogue about AI technologies, stating, "There is no place in our democracy for violence against anyone, regardless of their stance on AI issues." They also expressed gratitude for the prompt actions of law enforcement, noting the fortunate outcome that no individuals were harmed during the attack.
