A 20-year-old man has been apprehended by the San Francisco police following an incident where a Molotov cocktail was hurled at the residence of OpenAI CEO Sam Altman early Friday morning. Authorities were dispatched to the North Beach area around 4:12 a.m. to investigate a fire, as confirmed by police spokesperson Allison Maxie. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and the fire was quickly contained to an exterior gate of Altman's $27 million property located in the upscale Russian Hill neighborhood. Following the incident, the suspect fled on foot, prompting law enforcement to circulate his description among officers in the vicinity. Just after an hour later, at around 5:07 a.m., police received reports of a man threatening to set fire to OpenAI's headquarters. Upon arrival, officers recognized that the individual matched the description of the suspect involved in the earlier Molotov cocktail incident at Altman's home. OpenAI expressed gratitude for the swift action taken by the San Francisco police. A representative stated, "This morning, someone threw a Molotov cocktail at Sam Altman's home and also made threats at our San Francisco headquarters. Thankfully, no one was hurt. We deeply appreciate how quickly SFPD responded and the support from the city in helping keep our employees safe." The police department has indicated that charges are pending, and the investigation remains active. Once primarily a figure in Silicon Valley, Altman has gained international recognition, having traveled with former President Donald Trump and engaged with various global leaders. However, public perception of AI has significantly shifted in recent months, particularly following OpenAI's controversial partnership announcement with the Pentagon, which raised eyebrows shortly after Anthropic's refusal of similar terms from the Department of Defense.
