In a remarkable turn of events, Arm's stock surged by over 13% in premarket trading on Wednesday, following the company's announcement that its groundbreaking in-house chip is projected to generate a staggering $15 billion in revenue by 2031. The British semiconductor and software design powerhouse unveiled its first internal chip, the AGI CPU, during a high-profile event in San Francisco on Tuesday. Tailored specifically for AI inference in data centers, the AGI CPU comes at a time when the demand for advanced central processing units is soaring, thanks to the rise of agentic AI technologies. Arm's CEO, Rene Haas, indicated that the company anticipates total annual revenue reaching $25 billion, with earnings per share estimated at $9. This revenue forecast represents a remarkable sixfold increase from the $4 billion annual revenue achieved in 2025. Despite a 1.5% decline in stock value on Tuesday, the announcement sparked a significant market reaction, pushing Arm's shares up approximately 13.2%. Traditionally, Arm has licensed its instruction sets to various companies, earning royalties on processors utilizing its designs. However, with the launch of its new chip, Arm is now entering direct competition with major clients such as Amazon, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Google. Citi analysts labeled this announcement as a historic shift for Arm, noting that although the company's move towards chip manufacturing had been anticipated, the unveiling of a fully developed server chip—with backing from industry giants like Meta and OpenAI—was a positive surprise for investors. Analysts expressed optimism that Arm's ambitious revenue projections would alleviate any concerns regarding potential changes to the company's margin structure. They highlighted that the $15 billion revenue forecast could lead to an impressive increase in gross and operating profit, significantly enhancing shareholder value. Meta has emerged as the first official customer for Arm's innovative chip, aligning with its extensive data center expansion plans and an impressive $135 billion capital expenditure for AI this year. Other early adopters include OpenAI, Cloudflare, and SAP, illustrating the chip's broad appeal in a $1 trillion market. Mohamed Awad, Arm's head of cloud AI, emphasized that industry partners are recognizing the chip's potential benefits. Arm's CFO, Jason Child, revealed that the new chip is being sold at a gross profit margin of around 50%, while Awad assured that it is competitively priced to cater to companies that may not have the resources to develop their own chips in-house. This strategy not only expands Arm's market reach but also provides existing customers with more options, ultimately paving the way for greater profit opportunities for the company.
