Arm releases first in-house chip, with Meta as debut customer

After over three decades of licensing its designs, Arm Holdings has taken a significant step by producing its first in-house chip, the AGI CPU, unveiled by CEO Rene Haas at an event in San Francisco. This pivotal development transforms Arm from a design-oriented company into a direct competitor in the chip market. Meta has emerged as the inaugural customer, as the social media giant invests heavily in AI data centers, with capital expenditures projected up to $135 billion this year. Meta's software engineer, Paul Saab, who has been involved with the project since its inception, highlighted the strategic advantage of the Arm chip, stating it offers increased flexibility in their software stack and supply chain. Although the terms of the deal remain undisclosed, experts believe it could substantially bolster Arm's revenue, especially if it captures a small percentage of Meta's extensive budget. Chip analyst Patrick Moorhead suggests that this partnership could be transformative for Arm, pointing out the rising demand for CPUs as the AI landscape evolves. Nvidia has noted that as AI technology advances, CPUs are becoming crucial, indicating a shift in the market dynamics. The CPU market may experience growth rates surpassing those of GPUs by 2028, according to Futurum Group, as AI demands more general computing power. During the event, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang praised Arm's new development, emphasizing the collaborative spirit within the tech industry. With around 50 partners backing the launch, Arm's cloud AI head, Mohamed Awad, expressed optimism about the future, recognizing the vast potential in a $1 trillion market. Arm is gearing up for full production of its AGI CPU at a newly established lab in Austin, Texas. The company has invested $71 million into this facility, which has seen its workforce grow to over 1,000 engineers dedicated to chip development. Currently, the manufacturing of the AGI CPU is outsourced to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), though there are plans to expand production capabilities. The AGI CPU is designed to support artificial general intelligence, allowing for a dense configuration that can accommodate up to 64 CPUs and approximately 8,700 cores in a single rack. This efficiency is expected to appeal to data center operators looking to optimize power consumption. Meta, which is expanding its AI infrastructure across various states, sees the introduction of Arm's CPU as a vital step in meeting its computing needs. The collaboration aims to make Arm's technology broadly available, echoing the principles of the Open Compute Project initiated by Meta in 2011. While pricing details are not yet public, Arm intends to offer a competitively priced alternative for companies unable to develop their own processors.
