Arm is releasing the first in-house chip in its 35-year history

In a groundbreaking development after nearly 36 years of operating as a licensing powerhouse, Arm Holdings has officially entered the realm of chip manufacturing. During a recent event in San Francisco, the renowned semiconductor and software company unveiled its first in-house chip, the Arm AGI CPU. This production-ready processor is specifically engineered for AI data centers and aimed at enhancing inference capabilities. Developed from the Arm Neoverse family of CPU IP cores and in collaboration with Meta, the Arm AGI CPU marks a significant shift in Arm's strategy. Meta becomes the inaugural customer for this new chip, which is tailored to work seamlessly with its training and inference accelerator. Other notable partners include OpenAI, Cerebras, and Cloudflare, who are also on board as launch collaborators. This move has been anticipated for quite some time, as Arm has been working on its chip designs since 2023, according to reports from CNBC. The processors are now available for order, indicating a swift transition from licensing to manufacturing. Notably, this marks a historic departure for Arm, which has traditionally focused on licensing its designs to other chip makers. Now under the ownership of Japan's Softbank Group, Arm is set to compete directly with many of its former partners. The introduction of a CPU, rather than a GPU, is particularly significant given the rising interest in GPUs for AI applications. CPUs play a critical role in data center architectures, managing an array of tasks from memory and storage management to workload scheduling and data movement.
