When Amazon badly needed a ride, Europe’s Ariane 6 rocket delivered

In a significant achievement for European space endeavors, the Ariane 6 rocket made its inaugural flight on Thursday, successfully deploying 32 satellites into low-Earth orbit for Amazon's broadband initiative. The launch took place at 11:45 am EST (16:45 UTC) from the Guiana Space Center, located on the northeastern coast of South America. The Ariane 6, specifically in its heavy-lift configuration known as Ariane 64, ascended into a clear sky powered by a hydrogen-fueled main engine and four solid rocket boosters. This configuration harnessed over 3.4 million pounds of thrust (15,400 kilonewtons) as it navigated northeast over the Atlantic Ocean. Within two hours of liftoff, the upper stage of the rocket successfully released all 32 satellites into a precise orbit at an altitude of 289 miles (465 kilometers). Both Amazon and Arianespace, the French launch services provider, celebrated the mission's success. Josef Aschbacher, director general of the European Space Agency, emphasized the launch's importance, stating, "With the powerful roar of four boosters at liftoff comes more than double the payload mass to orbit, setting Europe back on stage for launching all satellites to all orbits." He also noted that while the Ariane rocket fleet is now complete, upgrades are already being planned for future missions, starting with the upcoming launch of their planet-hunting satellite Plato on an enhanced Ariane 6. David Cavaillolès, CEO of Arianespace, remarked, "With the first flight of Ariane 64, Europe’s heavy-lift launcher has demonstrated its ability to deliver the most demanding large-scale constellation missions. We are proud to support Amazon Leo with a reliable, high-performance European launch solution as we begin a series of 18 missions enabling the deployment of their constellation."
