Tiny startup Arcee AI built a 400B open source LLM from scratch to best Meta’s Llama

A small startup named Arcee AI is making waves in the AI landscape by launching Trinity, an impressive 400 billion parameter open-source language model. This ambitious endeavor positions Arcee against industry titans like Google, Meta, and Microsoft, who have long dominated the AI model sector. Trinity is touted as one of the largest open-source foundation models ever released by a U.S. company and is available under the Apache license, ensuring its permanence as an open resource. According to Arcee, initial benchmark tests reveal that Trinity competes favorably with Meta's Llama 4 Maverick, as well as the high-performing Z.ai GLM-4.5 from Tsinghua University in China. While Trinity currently excels in text processing, the company plans to introduce additional capabilities, including a vision model and speech-to-text features. The team at Arcee, which consists of just 30 individuals, is particularly focused on attracting U.S. developers and academics who may be hesitant to adopt models from foreign sources. CTO Lucas Atkins emphasized the importance of providing an exceptional open-weight model, stating, "To win the hearts and minds of developers, you have to give them the best." Benchmark results indicate that Trinity is competitive, demonstrating strong performance in coding, math, reasoning, and common-sense tasks. This latest model follows Arcee’s release of smaller models, including the 26 billion parameter Trinity Mini and the experimental 6 billion parameter Trinity Nano, both of which were developed in just six months at a cost of $20 million using advanced Nvidia GPUs. Arcee's journey began with a focus on customizing existing models for large enterprises, but as demand grew, the necessity for their own model became clear. Founder and CEO Mark McQuade noted that the decision to develop Trinity stemmed from a desire to provide a reliable, U.S.-made alternative to models predominantly sourced from China. By choosing an open-source framework, Arcee aims to maintain a transparent and accessible approach to AI. McQuade remarked that while many companies have released models, few have done so at this scale and with the commitment to open-source principles. All variants of the Trinity model will be available for free download, with plans to offer a hosted version at competitive API pricing. As Arcee AI continues to refine its models and expand its offerings, the startup is poised to make a significant impact in the competitive AI landscape, providing developers with a robust, open-source solution that stands apart from the market's dominant players.
