Arc Boats, the innovative Los Angeles startup established by former SpaceX employees in 2021, is making waves in the maritime industry with its latest venture into tugboat manufacturing. The company has just announced its first significant contract, valued at $160 million, with Curtin Maritime, a leading operator of tugs and barges. This groundbreaking order includes eight hybrid-electric tugboats, set to make their debut in the waters around the Los Angeles port by 2027. These specialized vessels, known as ship-assist tugboats, are designed to maneuver massive cargo ships in and out of busy ports like Los Angeles. According to Arc's CEO and co-founder, Mitch Lee, these tugboats are essentially "torque generating machines," which underscores their critical role in maritime operations. Traditional tugboats rely heavily on diesel engines, notorious for emitting harmful pollutants such as black carbon and sulfur oxides, making them some of the most environmentally damaging vehicles in operation. Arc's hybrid design aims to address this issue by replacing conventional diesel power with electric propulsion systems. This shift not only helps reduce emissions and aligns with environmental regulations but also contributes to improved air quality in the region. Lee highlighted that while the deal is for eight tugboats, the impact could be substantial, given that only around 20 similar vessels are currently operational at the LA port. The transition to electric power also offers practical advantages. Lee noted that swapping out large diesel engines for electric motors frees up valuable space on the tugboats. This could potentially enhance crew accommodations, which is essential since tugboat operators often spend extended shifts on board. Additionally, without large exhaust stacks, visibility for operators in the control tower, or "wheelhouse," is significantly improved. Arc's new tugboats will primarily run on electric propulsion, boasting over 4,000 horsepower from a robust 6MWh battery. While a smaller diesel generator will be included for backup to charge the battery during longer journeys, Lee emphasized that it is designed to be rarely used, ensuring that the vessels remain efficient. Moreover, Lee anticipates that the simplicity of electric powertrains will lead to reduced maintenance downtime, coupled with the financial benefits of lower fuel consumption. Despite not being able to personally test these larger tugs due to licensing restrictions, Lee remains optimistic about the potential to revolutionize the tugboat sector. He believes that modernizing these essential vessels will significantly contribute to the economy, especially as commercial maritime activities continue to grow.
