Arbor Energy just landed a billion-dollar order to bring rocket turbine tech to the power grid

Arbor Energy, an innovative energy startup, has announced a groundbreaking agreement to supply up to 5 gigawatts of its advanced modular turbines to GridMarket, a company dedicated to facilitating power projects for data centers and industrial consumers. CEO Brad Hartwig emphasized the urgency of demand, stating, "Everyone wants more power. They wanted it yesterday." As energy needs escalate, the company is poised to meet these challenges head-on. The turbines, known as Halcyon, leverage rocket turbomachinery technology originally developed for space exploration. The first commercial units will be 3D printed and each is designed to generate 25 megawatts of power. If the order from GridMarket is fully realized, it could lead to the production of 200 turbines. While specific financial details remain undisclosed, Hartwig indicated a significant readiness to invest, with figures reaching towards single-digit billions of dollars. Arbor aims to connect its initial turbine to the power grid by 2028, gradually increasing production to over 100 units annually by 2030. The ultimate vision is to achieve a capacity of 10 gigawatts each year. Originally, the Halcyon turbines were designed to operate on organic materials, such as crop waste and wood scraps, converting them into syngas—a flammable gas mixture—while capturing the resultant CO2 for underground storage. This innovative approach would allow the turbines to produce carbon-negative energy. Recent developments have enabled the Halcyon turbines to utilize natural gas alongside biomass, transforming them into more versatile energy producers. However, this shift means that while the turbines can still sequester CO2, they won't be carbon negative when powered by natural gas alone. Hartwig highlighted the company's commitment to working with suppliers of low-leak natural gas to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions during production. With a target of reducing emissions to less than 10 grams of CO2 per kilowatt-hour, Arbor Energy's vision surpasses traditional natural gas power plants, which typically emit around 400 grams of CO2 per kilowatt-hour. The deal with GridMarket reflects a growing trend in energy demand, particularly driven by the data center boom, as traditional gas turbine manufacturers struggle to keep up with the rapid pace of change in the market. Arbor believes its advanced 3D printing methods and innovative designs will enable faster market entry compared to traditional turbine manufacturers, who face significant production bottlenecks. Hartwig noted, "If you were to get in line for a turbine today, you’d be waiting until 2032." With the pressing need for energy solutions, Arbor Energy is positioning itself to deliver power when it’s needed most.
