Arattai to finally get the one feature WhatsApp users have had for years

Sridhar Vembu, co-founder of Zoho, has announced that the messaging app Arattai will soon implement end-to-end encryption for its text messages. This feature has been a staple for WhatsApp users for years, while Arattai has only offered this security measure for voice calls until now. In a recent post on X (formerly Twitter), Vembu explained the benefits of end-to-end encryption, stating, "End-to-end encryption keeps that data on the device only (no cloud storage, unless a backup is specified). So it is actually easier on our servers and lowers our cost to serve users." He further clarified that when backups are made, the data remains encrypted, in contrast to the server-level features provided by other applications like Zoho Cliq. Vembu highlighted that Arattai is moving towards disabling cloud storage to embrace this encryption model, with testing currently underway. Originally slated for a November release, the rollout has been expedited. Positioned as a competitor to WhatsApp in the Indian market, Arattai is part of Zoho’s broader strategy to challenge major tech players like Microsoft, Salesforce, and Google with its suite of applications, including Zoho Workspace, Zoho Mail, and Zoho CRM. Despite its previous lack of end-to-end encryption, Arattai boasts unique features that set it apart from its well-funded competitors. One such feature is 'Pocket,' a personal cloud storage solution that allows users to save messages, media, and notes for easy access across devices. This stands in contrast to WhatsApp, which often complicates the process of storing important messages. Moreover, Arattai has opted out of integrating AI functionalities, unlike WhatsApp, which recently introduced Meta AI. This decision has been welcomed by users who found the AI features disruptive. Additionally, the app facilitates seamless meeting scheduling and joining directly within the platform, eliminating the need for external tools like Zoom or Google Meet. The Meetings feature is conveniently accessible from the bottom dock, enhancing user experience.
