Apple's new Vision Pro is 'the future of the Mac', one of the top minds in tech says

Ben Thompson, the founder of Stratechery and a respected voice in technology analysis, has shared his thoughts on Apple's recently unveiled Vision Pro AR/VR headset, calling it potentially transformative for Mac users. He believes this innovative device could serve not only as a standalone computing platform but also as a powerful accessory for Apple's desktop computers. Introduced during the WWDC keynote, the Vision Pro represents Apple's long-awaited entry into the realms of augmented and virtual reality, which the company refers to as 'spatial computing.' With a starting price of $3,499, the headset is positioned as a premium product, reflecting the complexity of its manufacturing. However, Thompson suggests that prices will likely decrease over time. The Vision Pro boasts an extensive array of features, including immersive FaceTime capabilities, gaming options, and a unique function that allows users to extend their Mac desktop into their physical environment. This feature creates virtually limitless workspace, liberating users from the confines of traditional MacBook displays. While the headset primarily utilizes hand gestures for navigation, users can also connect Bluetooth peripherals like keyboards and mice for traditional desktop interactions. Thompson points out that Apple's previous attempts to position the iPad as a productive device fell short due to the limitations of iPadOS. He highlights the cumbersome nature of connecting external devices and the overall lack of flexibility compared to Mac computers. With the Vision Pro, however, productivity apps can thrive thanks to its access to an App Store and a robust developer ecosystem, allowing for easy porting of iPad apps. Despite its promising features, Thompson cautions against viewing the Vision Pro as a Mac replacement. He believes Apple will likely maintain the same restrictions found in iOS and iPadOS, limiting its potential. Feedback from WWDC attendees suggests that while the Vision Pro is equipped with numerous features, it may still be searching for a clear purpose, reminiscent of the initial launch of the Apple Watch. Thompson emphasizes that the Vision Pro's capability to mirror a desktop computer should not be underestimated. He argues that its operating system, visionOS, may offer a more compelling productivity experience than the iPad due to its 'infinite canvas.' He anticipates that Apple will utilize high-bandwidth connections to ensure seamless integration between the Mac and the Vision Pro, potentially eliminating lag issues. The concept of extending a desktop into one's environment isn't new, with competitors like Meta showcasing similar features in their Quest headsets. However, Apple's unique integration of hardware and software could make the Vision Pro particularly appealing, especially with native support for services like FaceTime and iMessage. As the headset evolves and its price becomes more accessible, it could significantly enhance the Mac experience, allowing users to work without the limitations of smaller screens while on the go.
