Apple stages sharpest rally in 9 months as execs cite iPhone, Mac demand in boosting guidance

Apple's shares surged over 4% on Thursday, marking the company's most significant increase in nine months. This rally followed the release of impressive quarterly results and a revenue forecast that surpassed analysts' predictions. CEO Tim Cook, who is set to retire in September after 15 years of leadership, highlighted the company's strong performance despite facing considerable supply challenges attributed mainly to a global memory shortage. The tech giant projected that revenue for the fiscal third quarter, ending in June, would rise between 14% and 17% compared to the previous year, a notable increase above the analysts' estimate of 9.5%. Cook emphasized the ongoing popularity of the iPhone 17 series, describing it as the "most popular lineup in our history," alongside robust demand for several Mac models. Earlier this year, Apple launched the affordable MacBook Neo, which Cook noted has received an overwhelming response, driving demand beyond expectations. While analysts sought more information from Cook regarding the rising memory costs, which he believes will continue to escalate, investors remained largely optimistic. Morgan Stanley analysts, who recommend buying Apple stock, expressed increased confidence in the company's ability to manage profit margins following the favorable earnings report. They revised their earnings per share forecast for the fiscal year upward to $8.89 from $8.63, attributing this change to the positive earnings results. In addition to the bullish guidance, Apple reported a revenue gain of 17%, reaching $111.18 billion, up from $95.4 billion a year earlier, while analysts had anticipated sales of $109.66 billion. The company exceeded expectations in Mac, iPad, and services revenue, although iPhone sales fell short of projections. Apple's services division continues to be a significant growth driver, with revenue increasing by approximately 16% to $30.98 billion compared to $26.65 billion last year. This segment benefits from a higher profit margin than hardware sales. With over 2.5 billion active devices in circulation, Apple leverages its extensive customer base to promote subscriptions for entertainment services, as well as for Apple Pay, iCloud, and AppleCare. The company's gross margin has steadily improved, reaching 49.3% in the latest quarter, up from 48.2% previously. For the upcoming June quarter, Apple anticipates a gross margin between 47.5% and 48.5%. Analysts from KeyBanc, who maintain a hold rating on the stock, noted that Apple's margin forecast does not reflect the anticipated impact of rising memory prices.
