Hey Siri, here’s what I actually want from AI

After two years of development and a significant legal battle costing $250 million, Apple is gearing up to unveil its much-anticipated AI-enhanced Siri across devices, including the latest Apple Vision Pro mixed reality headset. During the recent WWDC keynote, the tech giant shared exciting updates about Siri's new capabilities, designed to leverage the potential of their hardware, which they claim is optimized for 'Apple Intelligence.' Despite my skepticism towards AI in everyday life, the demonstrations of Siri's new features sparked curiosity. The vision presented was of an AI assistant that is perpetually active, knowledgeable about the user, and capable of managing multiple conversations across several apps. While privacy concerns loom large, the allure of having an assistant that can streamline my digital interactions is hard to ignore. I envision Siri as my personal assistant, akin to Emily from "The Devil Wears Prada," anticipating my needs before I even articulate them. Imagine Siri automatically scheduling dinner plans when a friend texts me about meeting up, or reminding me of a prescription while I’m near the pharmacy. Although Siri may not fully deliver such functionality at launch, its direction is promising. During the presentation, Apple’s Senior Director of AI Engineering, Justin Titi, showcased a feature where Siri retrieves a specific text about a dessert his daughter mentioned weeks ago. This capability exemplifies how the new Siri will utilize 'personal context'—information stored in Apple apps like iMessage and Calendar—to enhance user experience. Siri will be able to comprehend what’s displayed on your screen, ensuring that even an Instagram photo can lead to actionable insights. However, the development of these AI personal assistants often requires users to sacrifice a degree of their privacy, raising questions about the trade-off between convenience and security. While I’m wary of sharing personal data with tech companies, Apple seems to prioritize user security more than many of its competitors, employing on-device AI processing to minimize risks. In a candid conversation, I expressed my desire to delegate mundane tasks to an AI. But a colleague reminded me of the importance of engaging with life’s details instead of outsourcing them to technology. This raises a valid concern: will reliance on AI diminish our personal skills and connections?
