Inside Apple’s Siri Crisis: Delayed promises, leadership shakeup, and more

On June 8, Apple is poised to unveil significant enhancements to Siri, marking a pivotal moment a decade after its initial launch. This revamped version of Siri is reported to be completely reengineered for the AI era, yet its journey has been fraught with challenges. From ambitious commitments to unfulfilled timelines, Siri has struggled to establish itself as a leading digital assistant amidst fierce competition from AI newcomers like ChatGPT and Gemini. Apple first introduced Siri with the iPhone 4S on October 14, 2011, heralding it as the first AI voice assistant on a smartphone. Between 2012 and 2014, the assistant expanded to the iPad, thanks to iOS 6, and gained features such as sports updates, restaurant bookings, and movie listings. The introduction of the “Hey Siri” feature in 2014 further enhanced user experience by allowing hands-free activation. Over the years, Siri has adapted to user habits and locations, becoming more intelligent with the integration of third-party apps starting with iOS 10 in 2016. However, a slowdown occurred between 2022 and 2024 as Apple ramped up its generative AI initiatives. Siri lagged behind competitors like ChatGPT, which gained rapid popularity, prompting Google and Anthropic to enter the fray with their own AI models. At WWDC 2024, Apple announced a new initiative dubbed Apple Intelligence and a revamped Siri that promises improved contextual understanding across applications. Despite these announcements, many anticipated features, such as enhanced app integration, were postponed beyond the initial iOS 18 launch. Internal discussions at Apple revealed growing concerns about the leadership of AI chief John Giannandrea, with reports suggesting that CEO Tim Cook's confidence had waned. In response, Mike Rockwell, who leads the Vision Pro team, has taken the reins of Siri’s redevelopment, with hardware engineer Paul Meade stepping into Rockwell's former role. Looking ahead to WWDC 2026, Apple aims to fulfill its delayed promises by introducing an AI-powered Siri that integrates with Google’s Gemini AI. The company is also expected to showcase a dedicated Siri app featuring a chatbot-like interface, allowing users to pose questions and review conversation history. However, the full implementation of these features may not be realized until September 2026.
