At the recent Worldwide Developers Conference, Apple unveiled a groundbreaking feature for its Passwords app that aims to enhance user security by effortlessly updating weak or compromised passwords. Beth Dakin, a senior manager from the Safari engineering team, highlighted this new capability, stating, "Now, you can automatically update eligible accounts to strong passwords with just a tap." The innovative tool is designed to take action on behalf of users, allowing them to change compromised passwords with a simple click on a blue button found on the Security page within the app. Previously, Apple had alerted users about weak, reused, or potentially exposed passwords, but this new feature elevates password management to an entirely new level. Integrating Apple's AI, known as Apple Intelligence, the Passwords app works seamlessly with Safari to facilitate website navigation, sign-ins, and password upgrades. This update was among several enhancements mentioned during Apple's keynote, which also showcased other exciting developments such as an improved Siri, advanced photo editing capabilities, and enhanced device search functions. While Apple is not the pioneer in offering such password-changing functionalities—Google introduced a similar feature in its Chrome browser back in 2021—this new addition is significant due to its integration into Safari and the Passwords app, which come pre-installed on most Apple devices.
