In a recent evaluation by the Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) Education Fund, Apple has been noted for its poor performance in the repairability of its laptops and smartphones. The consumer advocacy organization awarded Apple a disappointing C-minus for laptop repairability and a D-minus for cell phone repairability. The report, titled “Failing the Fix (2026): Grading Laptop and Cell Phone Companies on the Fixability of Their Products,” focused on the ten latest laptops and smartphones available on manufacturers’ French websites as of January. The inclusion of French products relates to the country's repairability index, a system that mandates the disclosure of repairability ratings on devices sold within France. PIRG, alongside other advocates for the right to repair, is urging manufacturers to extend these French repairability standards to their products in other markets. The grading process took into account the physical ease of disassembly, which PIRG believes should be a key factor in any repairability score, alongside other criteria from the French index. Additionally, companies received point deductions if they are members of TechNet or the Consumer Technology Association, both of which oppose right-to-repair legislation in the United States.
