Apple may be preparing five new satellite features for iPhones

Since launching emergency satellite services with the iPhone 14 in 2022, Apple has made significant strides in enhancing its satellite capabilities. The company is now reportedly developing five new satellite functionalities for its upcoming iPhone models. According to Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple is creating an API that will enable developers to integrate satellite connections into their applications. However, the compatibility of various features will depend on the app creators, meaning not all services may function seamlessly with this new system. One of the exciting enhancements in the works is satellite connectivity integration within Apple Maps. This would empower users to navigate without needing a SIM card or Wi-Fi. Additionally, Apple aims to enhance its satellite messaging by allowing users to send images, expanding beyond the current text-only limitations. Another significant upgrade is the potential to maintain connectivity even when the iPhone is tucked away, whether in a pocket, a vehicle, or indoors. This would eliminate the requirement for the device to have a clear view of the sky. Gurman also reaffirmed previous reports that the upcoming iPhone 18 series will support 5G NTN, allowing cell towers to utilize satellite connections for improved coverage. Currently, Apple uses the Globalstar satellite network for its existing features, but the tech giant is contemplating a possible sale, with SpaceX as a potential buyer. Most of the new features Apple is developing will necessitate substantial enhancements to Globalstar’s satellite infrastructure. The company intends to provide a core set of functionalities at no extra cost, while advanced features might come with a fee for users who choose to connect through carriers like SpaceX. However, the potential merger between SpaceX and Globalstar could introduce complexities for Apple while also presenting new collaboration opportunities. This could lead to premium satellite features and a new subscription tier for superior connectivity. As of now, Apple has no immediate plans to offer phone calls, video calls, or internet browsing via satellite, although SpaceX is reportedly pursuing these capabilities aggressively.
