In defense of Apple’s $230 iPhone sock

Apple has stirred up quite a buzz with its latest offering: the iPhone Pocket, a stylish cloth sling designed for your phone, priced at $149.95 for the short version and $229.95 for the longer, crossbody option. This item might seem outrageous at first glance, especially following the $19 polishing cloth, but it holds a deeper connection to the fashion industry that’s worth exploring. The iPhone Pocket is described by Apple as being inspired by the idea of 'a piece of cloth,' showcasing a minimalist design that consists of a single piece of fabric. For those attuned to fashion trends, this product makes sense. Imagine a vibrant yellow version attached to a chic azalea pink Telfar bag—though the price tag might deter many potential buyers. This design bears the influence of the late Issey Miyake, the legendary Japanese designer who introduced the APOC (a piece of cloth) concept back in 1997. His innovative approach to fashion was not only tech-savvy but also focused on waste reduction. Apple states, "Featuring a ribbed mesh structure with the qualities of the original pleats by Issey Miyake, the iPhone Pocket is a beautiful way to wear and carry your iPhone." The design cleverly allows users to peek at their phone's display when the fabric is stretched. Miyake’s legacy even extended to Steve Jobs, who admired his work and collaborated with him on a personal uniform for his time at Apple. Though Miyake passed away in 2022 and was not involved in the iPhone Pocket’s design, the product feels like a natural progression of their aesthetic partnership. Available in just three colors for the long version, the iPhone Pocket taps into the rising trend of crossbody phone accessories. Apple also introduced a $59 crossbody strap earlier this year, which some users have found to be ideal for photography, despite being somewhat cumbersome for everyday use. The short version of the iPhone Pocket is anticipated to be more popular due to its lower cost and wider array of colors. It draws comparisons to the quirky Labubu trend, which saw the plush keychains skyrocketing in value and popularity, suggesting that the iPhone Pocket might also find its niche as an accessory for accessories. As technology advances with options like Tap to Pay and phone-compatible wallets, the demand for dedicated phone bags is on the rise. Brands from Free People to IKEA are releasing miniature versions of their bags. This trend raises the question: could a simple sock-like pocket be the next big thing? While it’s uncertain if the iPhone Pocket will become a cultural phenomenon akin to Labubu, its reception this holiday season will be telling. For now, it stands as a bold statement piece that could redefine how we carry our devices.
