Apple may introduce a similar security feature to Google's Theft Detection: What users should know

The anticipated feature bears resemblance to Google's Theft Detection Lock, which has been a staple in Android smartphones for several years. Google's solution employs on-device AI to swiftly identify potential snatch-and-run incidents, locking the screen to secure user data. Apple's version is expected to follow suit, providing an additional layer of security during theft attempts. How exactly will this groundbreaking feature function? According to reports, Apple's system may utilize various signals, including data from the iPhone’s accelerometer, to ascertain when a device has been forcibly taken. Upon identifying a possible theft, the feature would initiate an automatic lock of the device. Moreover, to enhance its theft-detection capabilities, the feature is said to monitor the proximity between the iPhone and a paired Apple Watch. If the iPhone suddenly moves away from the connected smartwatch, this could serve as a crucial indicator of theft, prompting the device to lock itself immediately. Once implemented, this feature is expected to integrate seamlessly with Apple's existing Stolen Device Protection system. This system analyzes whether the iPhone is connected to a known Wi-Fi network or is in a familiar location, such as the user’s home or workplace. If the device is detected in an unfamiliar area or network, it could automatically lock, safeguarding user accounts and personal data. To take advantage of the Stolen Device Protection, users will likely need to enable two-factor authentication for their Apple Account. Additionally, they must set up a passcode, Face ID, or Touch ID, as well as Significant Locations. Importantly, the Find My feature must also be activated and cannot be disabled while Stolen Device Protection is in effect.
