In a recent financial report, Apple revealed that while its iPhone and Services revenue dominated headlines, the Mac segment experienced a surprising surge, largely fueled by increasing interest in AI applications. Analysts had anticipated Mac revenue to hover around $8 billion, but Apple exceeded expectations, reporting $8.4 billion for the second quarter ending March 28. This growth is particularly impressive given that projections suggested Mac sales would remain flat compared to the previous year. Instead, Apple reported a 6% year-over-year increase in Mac sales. The impressive figures can be partly attributed to the introduction of new products, notably the popular MacBook Neo. Even though these colorful devices were available for a limited time after preorders commenced on March 4, demand remained strong, with many units shipped later in the month. Apple CEO Tim Cook noted that the response to the Neo was “off the charts,” surpassing the company’s expectations. Cook highlighted that a record number of new customers opted for Macs during this quarter, with the Neo playing a significant role in attracting these users. He emphasized that the growth in Mac sales is also linked to the platform's suitability for running local AI models, such as OpenClaw, which took Apple by surprise as both the Mac mini and Mac Studio experienced rapid sellouts. “Both of these platforms are excellent for AI and agentic tools, and customer awareness is growing faster than we anticipated, leading to higher demand,” Cook explained. He also pointed out that the Mac mini has become a leading desktop choice in China, where interest in OpenClaw has surged. Despite the strong sales growth, Mac revenue remained stable on a quarter-over-quarter basis, indicating that this newfound demand has not yet reached a sustainable level. Cook mentioned that achieving a balance between supply and demand for the Mac mini and Studio models might take “several months.” He clarified that this constraint is not due to operational issues but rather a result of underestimating market demand. Additionally, enterprise demand has played a significant role, with companies like Perplexity choosing Macs as their primary platform for developing advanced AI solutions. Cook also noted that educational institutions, including Kansas City Public Schools, are increasingly moving away from Chromebooks in favor of the MacBook Neo.
