Once the cornerstone of Apple's workstation lineup, the Power Mac and Mac Pro towers have experienced a significant decline in updates, especially compared to the more frequently refreshed MacBook Air and MacBook Pro. Over the past 15 years, the Mac Pro has only received four hardware updates, with the 2012 refresh being largely akin to its 2010 predecessor. Though there was a glimmer of hope for Mac Pro enthusiasts when Apple introduced the M2 Ultra processor in mid-2023—marking a pivotal shift from Intel to Apple Silicon—expectations for regular updates may be misplaced. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, those looking forward to new hardware in 2026 should temper their excitement. He notes that the Mac Pro is currently sidelined as Apple shifts its focus toward the upcoming Mac Studio, which will feature the next-generation M5 Ultra chip. Gurman also highlights that Apple has no intentions of developing an M4 Ultra, and the recent Mac Studio refresh showcased the M3 Ultra alongside the M4 Max. While he refrains from outright dismissing the possibility of a Mac Pro update next year, the emphasis on the Mac Studio implies that significant changes to the Mac Pro are not on the horizon. Interestingly, the existing Mac Pro still operates on the M2 Ultra, rather than the more recent M3 Ultra, further suggesting that Apple is not prioritizing frequent updates for this high-end desktop. In contrast, other desktop models like the iMac, Mac mini, and Mac Studio have managed to skip a silicon generation since the introduction of the M1 in 2020.
