Apple has announced that its Journal app, which debuted in 2023 with iOS 17.2, will soon be available on both iPad and Mac. This expansion was revealed during the WWDC 2025 keynote, coinciding with the upcoming releases of iPadOS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26. Initially exclusive to the iPhone, the Journal app is designed to assist users in capturing their thoughts and daily experiences. Now, with the transition to the iPad and Mac, it will leverage the enhanced hardware and interface features of these devices. On the iPad, users will benefit from Apple Pencil support, allowing for handwritten notes, sketches, and drawings integrated into their entries. The app will also enable the addition of photos, audio recordings, and other media, enriching the journaling experience. The larger display and multitasking capabilities of the iPad promise to significantly improve how users engage with their journaling. For Mac users, the transition to a physical keyboard offers a more efficient way to type compared to the iPhone’s on-screen option. Apple has also announced that the Journal app will support multiple journals tailored to various themes or life events, with all content synchronized across devices via iCloud. Privacy remains a priority, as all journal entries will be end-to-end encrypted and securely stored in iCloud. Users can further protect their entries by locking them with Touch ID or Face ID, based on their device. Enhanced features will also allow users to revisit memories through a location-based map view, bookmark significant moments, and utilize advanced search filters for past entries based on criteria like photos and locations. Additionally, powered by on-device machine learning, the Journal app will offer personalized prompts based on users' recent activities, including visited places, music listened to, and photos taken. This functionality aims to foster consistent and meaningful journaling habits. The Journal app will be launched on iPad and Mac with the rollout of iPadOS 26 and macOS Tahoe 26, both set for public release later this year. As it becomes a more integral part of Apple’s ecosystem, the app is poised to encourage creativity and reflection among users on a larger scale.
