
Apple Inc. introduced its iPhone Air in China on Wednesday, but the reaction from consumers has been relatively lukewarm in the world's largest smartphone market. This debut follows the international rollout of Apple's latest iPhone lineup a month earlier, which had seen significant crowds at many global locations. Chinese consumers faced a longer wait for the iPhone Air, priced at 7,999 yuan, primarily due to its exclusive eSIM connectivity. Local carriers have been slow to adopt this technology, leading to limited consumer enthusiasm. At the Sanlitun store in Beijing, for instance, more shoppers were opting for the iPhone 17 Pro models instead of the newly launched Air, which was available for order and immediate pickup. In Shanghai, the situation was similar, with no queues forming for the iPhone Air. Some color options sold out by mid-morning, yet many potential buyers expressed interest without making purchases. Consumers found the sleek design and new color choices appealing, but interest did not translate to sales. Notably, other models in the iPhone lineup, such as the iPhone 17, 17 Pro, and 17 Pro Max, still support physical SIM cards, unlike the ultra-thin 5.6-millimeter iPhone Air, which Apple designed to maximize battery capacity. Despite the muted launch, Apple has been making strides in the Chinese market, reporting sales growth in the region after experiencing a decline over the previous seven quarters. The introduction of the iPhone Air could provide a boost as Apple competes against local brands like Huawei, Xiaomi, and Oppo, which also offer thin foldable devices. The pricing of the iPhone Air is higher compared to many local Android counterparts, yet its unique design sets it apart in the current market. Demand for Apple's new iPhones appears strong, bolstered by the redesign of the iPhone 17 Pro and the innovative Air model. According to Counterpoint Research, the iPhone 17 series has outpaced the iPhone 16 series by 14% in sales during the first ten days of availability in both the US and China.
