Apple’s iPhone Air 2 shifts to 2-nanometre and may not debut next year: Gurman

The upcoming iPhone Air 2 is making waves as new reports shed light on its potential features and the reasons behind its delayed release. Notable sources, including Bloomberg's Mark Gurman and The Information, have provided valuable details regarding Apple's strategy for the second-generation model. Previously, The Information indicated that the iPhone Air 2's launch had been postponed due to disappointing sales figures. This delay has allowed Apple more time to consider enhancements, such as the addition of a dual rear camera. However, Gurman's latest updates suggest that the device might not be slated for release next year, indicating a departure from Apple's usual annual launch schedule. This aligns with a broader strategy that seems to favor a more adaptable timetable. A major focus for the iPhone Air 2 is its anticipated transition to a 2-nanometre processor. The new A20 chip, likely produced using TSMC's advanced N2 process, promises significant advancements in energy efficiency and battery longevity, which are crucial for the device's performance. In contrast, the possibility of a second rear camera seems less feasible, as the current camera setup is already densely packed. Gurman points out that implementing such a change would demand considerable effort, particularly for a model that targets a relatively niche market. Initially, Apple had projected that the iPhone Air would account for approximately 6% to 8% of new iPhone sales, a figure that mirrors the performance of the iPhone 16 Plus. This positions the Air as a more specialized product within Apple's broader lineup. Looking ahead, Gurman outlines a potential release strategy for Apple: in the fall of 2026, the tech giant may unveil the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and its inaugural foldable iPhone. Approximately six months later, consumers might see the introduction of the iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and potentially an updated iPhone Air. This staggered release approach is expected to persist, with Apple likely launching five to six new iPhone models each year. Moreover, the iPhone Air serves a crucial internal role, according to Gurman. It acts as a testing ground for technologies that will eventually be incorporated into the foldable iPhone, including materials, miniaturization methods, internal components, battery systems, and software enhancements that begin with the Air line and pave the way for Apple's innovative new designs.
