With the recent launch of the iPhone 17 series still fresh in the market, speculation surrounding Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 models is heating up. Currently, iPhones equipped with Emergency SOS via satellite—available on the iPhone 14 and later—allow users to seek help even in remote areas without cellular coverage. However, these satellite capabilities are primarily limited to emergency functions, including Find My, Messages, and Roadside Assistance. According to a report by The Information, Apple is poised to expand its satellite capabilities significantly with the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. The tech giant is reportedly working on integrating full 5G satellite internet support, enabling users to access the internet directly via satellites. This advancement would provide iPhone users with comprehensive internet connectivity, regardless of their location on Earth. The report reveals, "Apple plans to add support in upcoming iPhones as early as next year for 5G networks that aren’t tethered to Earth’s surface, which includes satellites." Additionally, the standard iPhone 18 model is expected to receive this feature when it launches, now projected for March 2027. In a strategic shift, Apple may be altering its launch schedule for the iPhone 18 series, with the standard model delayed to 2027 while the Pro variants are anticipated to debut in September 2026. Notably, SpaceX's involvement in the same radio spectrum that supports the current satellite functions suggests potential collaboration. Apple has historically relied on Globalstar for its Emergency SOS services but reportedly turned down a partnership with SpaceX for Starlink satellite services. However, hints in the latest report suggest that a renewed partnership discussion between Apple and SpaceX might be on the horizon. Meanwhile, Globalstar's executive chairman Jay Monroe has hinted at the possibility of selling the company for over $10 billion, raising concerns about its financial stability if it loses a major client. Tensions between SpaceX owner Elon Musk and Apple have made headlines recently, with Musk accusing Apple of favoring OpenAI in App Store rankings and even filing a lawsuit against both companies. The outcome of these ongoing discussions could ultimately determine whether Apple can successfully implement 5G satellite support in its future iPhones.
