The recent Singles’ Day shopping festival in China saw a remarkable boost in smartphone sales, primarily fueled by the high demand for Apple's iPhone 17. According to findings from Counterpoint Research, Apple captured an impressive 26% share of the total smartphone sales during this month-long event, contributing to an overall sales increase of 3% compared to last year. The iPhone 17 emerged as a standout success, with its robust sales performance allowing Apple to maintain a strong competitive edge. However, when excluding Apple from the analysis, smartphone sales across the market dipped by 5%, indicating a more cautious atmosphere among consumers. Counterpoint characterized the current market as “drained of momentum,” reflecting broader economic uncertainties in China. Factors such as an ongoing crisis in the property sector and growing concerns regarding income security have led to a more reserved spending approach among shoppers. Despite these challenges, the Singles’ Day festival, which ended on November 11 after extensive promotions across major e-commerce platforms, recorded total sales of 1.70 trillion yuan (approximately $240 billion), a rise from 1.44 trillion yuan last year. However, the event did not generate widespread enthusiasm among consumers. Other smartphone manufacturers faced difficulties, with Huawei experiencing the most significant decrease, as its market share fell from 17% to 13%, largely due to its flagship Mate 80 missing the critical sales window. Xiaomi secured the second-largest market share at 17%, but its sales also declined compared to the previous year, partly because of the earlier launch of the Xiaomi 17 series. Amidst the overall market slowdown, Apple's success during this Singles’ Day highlights the brand's strong appeal, even in a challenging economic environment. The iPhone 17 series, which debuted in September, has achieved double-digit sales growth year-on-year in both the United States and China, according to Bloomberg. With four models in the lineup, the iPhone 17 has spurred many users to upgrade, including the newly released iPhone Air, known for being the world’s thinnest iPhone, which has attracted long lines of eager customers.
