Apple is gearing up to unveil its slimmest and lightest smartphone to date, the iPhone 17 Air, during the highly anticipated "Awe Dropping" event on September 9. For over a year, rumors and leaks have circulated about this latest addition to the iPhone family, and much of the device's features are already common knowledge. Expected to measure just 5.5mm in thickness, the iPhone 17 Air's sleek profile may come with some compromises, including the inclusion of only a single camera and a smaller battery. However, a recent leak suggests a potentially significant change: the possibility of the iPhone 17 Air being an eSIM-only device, eliminating the option for a physical SIM card. According to a report from Macrumors, Apple has mandated its retail staff at authorized resellers in the European Union to complete a training program focused on eSIM technology by September 5. While the report specifically mentions the EU, the ultra-thin design of the iPhone 17 Air hints that this eSIM-only feature might be applicable globally. Employees are required to undergo this training via Apple's SEED app, which is accessible to staff at Apple Stores and authorized resellers worldwide. Notably, since the launch of the iPhone 14, Apple has only offered eSIM support in the United States. The company has promoted eSIMs as a more secure alternative to physical SIM cards, as they cannot be removed even if the device is lost or stolen. Previously, The Information reported that Apple intends to roll out eSIM-only iPhones in additional markets. However, it remains unclear whether this shift will be limited to the iPhone 17 Air or extend to other models in the iPhone 17 lineup. Stay tuned for updates on pricing, features, and launch details for the iPhone 17 Pro, Pro Max, and Air models.
