iOS 26.2 may have just leaked Apple’s surprise smart home gadget

Apple has rolled out its iOS 26.2 beta update for selected iPhone beta testers, introducing a range of features including enhanced safety alerts, customizable lock screens, and expanded access to the AirPods Live Translation feature. However, intriguing details have emerged from the update that may hint at new smart home products from the tech giant. A recent report from Macworld uncovered code references indicating that Apple is preparing to unveil a new accessory for the smart home market. The Home app, which manages HomeKit devices, now contains a system flag labeled "isFirstPartyAccessory." This suggests the possibility of a new product that isn’t an Apple TV or HomePod, potentially a smart camera or doorbell. Notably, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo from TF Securities has previously indicated that Apple plans to begin mass production of a HomeKit-compatible wireless IP camera in 2026, with ambitions for tens of millions of units shipped annually. Kuo emphasized that this camera is designed for seamless integration with Apple hardware through wireless connectivity, enhancing user experience through the Apple ecosystem, including features powered by Apple Intelligence and Siri. Additionally, a significant upgrade to Siri is expected in 2024 with the release of iOS 26.4. The anticipated camera is rumored to include a long-lasting battery, potentially functioning for months or even a year on a single charge. It may also feature advanced capabilities such as motion detection and facial recognition, enhancing home automation features. If users deploy multiple Apple cameras throughout their homes, the system could automatically adjust settings—like turning off lights when a room is unoccupied or playing personalized music based on user preferences. Moreover, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has confirmed that Apple is developing an indoor security camera alongside a new home hub and a tabletop robot, with plans for a broader smart home security ecosystem debuting in 2026. Previous reports also suggested that Apple is exploring the development of a smart doorbell with Face ID functionality to unlock HomeKit smart locks.
