Apple has rolled out its latest iOS 26.1 Developer beta update, introducing support for additional languages within its Apple Intelligence features, alongside various user interface enhancements. Notably, a recent report from Macworld suggests that the tech giant may be taking steps to enhance compatibility with third-party wearables in the near future. The report highlights significant behind-the-scenes modifications in the iOS 26.1 code, indicating Apple's intention to facilitate better integration with non-Apple accessories and smartwatches. Among these changes is an unreleased feature termed 'Notification Forwarding,' which could empower users to receive notifications from their iPhones on non-Apple devices. Should this feature become available, users will be able to activate it through the Settings menu. However, it's important to note that the code indicates this notification forwarding may be limited to just one accessory at a time, meaning that enabling it could potentially disable notifications on an Apple Watch. Additionally, the beta version references new frameworks associated with accessory pairing, dubbed 'AccessoryExtension,' which may streamline the process of connecting third-party devices to an iPhone. The report also warns that these new functionalities for third-party accessories might not be universally accessible and could be restricted to users within the European Union. This move may be a response to recent rulings from the European Commission, which mandated that Apple enhance the interoperability of iOS with third-party developers and ensure that iPhone notifications are compatible with external accessories.
