Smart home PSA: Apple’s “new architecture” for Home app becomes mandatory today

Starting today, Apple is enforcing a significant update to its Home app as part of the transition to a new Home architecture. This change, initially announced in 2022, aims to elevate the performance and reliability of Apple's smart home ecosystem, enabling compatibility with a wider array of accessories. Despite its potential benefits, the rollout of this new architecture faced challenges. Many users experienced issues such as sluggishness and unresponsive devices during the initial launch with iOS 16.2. In response to these concerns, Apple paused the rollout and included the update in the subsequent iOS 16.4 release. For those who have delayed switching to the new architecture due to previous glitches or other reasons, the time for hesitation has passed. As of today, updating to the new architecture is mandatory for continued access to the Home app. Devices running older versions of iOS and macOS that do not support this updated architecture will no longer be able to control smart home devices. If you've been using the Home app on a compatible iPhone, iPad, or Mac and haven't seen an update prompt, you're already on the new system. For many users, this transition might feel like a long overdue upgrade, ensuring a smoother and more reliable smart home experience moving forward.
