Apple’s first foldable iPhone could see limited availability after launch

After much anticipation, Apple is gearing up to unveil its inaugural foldable device, the iPhone Fold, next year. However, a recent leak indicates that the device may experience supply shortages that could extend until late 2026. This information comes from renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who notes that the production of the foldable iPhone is lagging behind previous timelines. Despite these challenges, Kuo remains optimistic, stating that the iPhone Fold is still on track for a 2026 release. Early reports suggest that it may launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, while the standard iPhone 18 and iPhone Air 2 might be delayed until 2027. Kuo emphasized that the 'early-stage yield and ramp-up challenges' are significant hurdles that could prevent smooth shipments of the foldable device until 2027. "With limited supply and anticipated strong demand, the foldable iPhone is likely to encounter shortages until at least the end of 2026," he remarked. The analyst's warnings shed light on potential complications as the device approaches mass production. Previous reports had mentioned that Foxconn was set to begin manufacturing the iPhone Fold by the end of 2025, but those plans appear to have encountered obstacles. Additionally, Mizuho Securities has predicted that the launch could be further postponed to 2027 if Apple requires extra time to finalize critical features, including the device's hinge mechanism. Current leaks suggest that the iPhone Fold will adopt a book-style fold, differing from the clamshell design popularized by competitors like the Galaxy Flip 7. Rumored specifications include a 7.6 to 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.2 to 5.5-inch outer screen. When folded, the device may measure around 9 to 9.5mm thick, and when opened, approximately 4.5 to 4.8mm. Features such as side-mounted Touch ID, a titanium chassis, an under-display camera, and a seamless display are also expected. The iPhone Fold is anticipated to run on the A20 Pro chipset and may be released as an eSIM-only variant. Predictions regarding its price vary significantly, ranging from $1,800 to as much as $2,500. As the launch date approaches, tech enthusiasts will be keeping a close eye on developments surrounding this groundbreaking device.
