Apple's anticipated foray into the foldable smartphone arena could be more accessible than many market analysts previously imagined. Ming-Chi Kuo, a renowned analyst from TF Securities International, suggests that the hinge mechanism for the forthcoming foldable iPhone will incur significantly lower costs than earlier forecasts. In his recent update shared on Medium, Kuo indicated that the average selling price (ASP) for the hinge component is projected to be between $70 and $80 (around ₹7,000–₹8,000) during mass production. This marks a substantial drop from earlier estimates that ranged from $100 to $120 (approximately ₹8,000–₹10,000) per unit. Notably, this reduction is attributed not to cheaper materials, but rather to enhanced assembly design and manufacturing efficiencies, driven by Apple's supply chain partners. This development has the potential to improve Apple's profit margins or allow the company to pass some savings down to consumers, making the foldable iPhone a more competitive option compared to its rivals. To facilitate this project, Foxconn and Taiwanese firm Shin Zu Shing (SZS) have reportedly established a joint venture focused on producing the foldable hinge, with Foxconn taking on a leading role in strategic decisions. The joint venture is believed to have secured approximately 65% of the hinge orders, while Amphenol will manage the remaining 35%. Kuo also mentioned that Luxshare-ICT might join as an additional supplier after 2027, which could further reduce costs through increased competition. The first foldable iPhone, speculated to be named the iPhone 18 Fold, is expected to showcase a book-style design reminiscent of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold series. It is rumored to feature a 7.8-inch internal display and a 5.5-inch external screen, striking a balance between portability and productivity. The device is anticipated to use a hybrid titanium and aluminum frame, ensuring both durability and a lightweight feel. When folded, the iPhone is expected to measure 9.2mm, while unfolding it will reduce to 4.6mm, reflecting Apple's commitment to engineering excellence. Kuo predicts that this innovative foldable device will make its debut in September 2026, alongside the iPhone 18 series. Despite its sophisticated design and premium materials, the starting price is projected to be around $1,999 (approximately ₹1.74 lakh), positioning it alongside existing flagship foldable phones rather than making it prohibitively expensive.
